Recycling and WEEE Regulations

Recycling and WEEE Regulations

Why should waste electrical goods be recycled?

Recycling unwanted electrical products is better for the environment. The amount of electrical waste, from hairdryers to washing machines, that is thrown away is increasing by around 5% each year. This means that in one year the amount of electrical waste created in the UK could fill Wembley Stadium 6 times!

Over 75% of waste electrical goods end up in landfill, where lead and other toxins contained in electrical goods can cause soil and water contamination. This can have a very harmful effect on the natural habitat, wildlife and also human health. When situated near populated areas these toxins can cause problems to communities as their water and soil is polluted.

Many of the electrical items that we throw away can be repaired or recycled. Recycling items helps to save natural resources and also reduces the environmental and health risks associated with sending waste electrical goods to landfill.

When you buy from us we will recycle your old product for free*.

WEEE Regulations

From 1 July 2007, new government regulations called The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations came into force encouraging people to arrange collection or recycling of old electrical products, rather than throwing them away.

The Crossed out Wheelie Bin symbol

In accordance with WEEE regulations all new electrical and electronic products sold now carry the crossed out wheelie bin logo (left) to help you identify which products are recyclable. You do not need to have purchased new equipment to be able to recycle your old appliances.

This symbol on the product or in the instructions means that your electrical and electronic equipment should be disposed at the end of life separately from your household waste.

Recycling old electrical and electronic products

When you have finished with a WEEE product, please do not put in your domestic waste bin, as it will not be recycled. Please use one of the following disposal options instead:

  • Recycle:

To ensure that your WEEE is recycled in accordance with the regulations, you must ensure that the goods are not put in the bin, but are separately disposed of by taking the WEEE to your local designated collection facility (DCF). This would normally be your local civic amenity site (recycling centre). To locate your local site, contact your authority ( or go directly to the listing of approved sites where you'll see they are arranged by county (

It is likely that approximately 1000 civic amenity (CA) sites will be upgraded to Designated Collection Facilities (DCFs) where consumers of WEEE from private households can deposit their WEEE.

  • Hand the old equivalent product back to the retailer:

Alternatively when you purchase a replacement product, hand the old product of equivalent type and function back to the retailer. They should accept it as a requirement under the WEEE Regulations (2006 No. 3289) unless they are a member of the Distributor Take Back Scheme (DTS). WEEE Take-Back Policy is not a member of the Distributor Take-Back Scheme (DTS) but does offer an in-store take-back facility. When you purchase from us we will recycle and dispose of your old electrical appliance for free*. If you want us to do this simply post or bring your old product to the address below and we will ensure your WEEE are recycled/disposed of in the appropriate and legal manner:
